Doyle Brunson Day 2026: Negreanu Calls Brunson and Ivey Poker’s “Odd Couple”

Last Updated on October 3, 2026 by Bala Kumar

A golf story that sums up two legends

Every year on 2 October, the poker world pauses to remember Doyle Brunson, the “Godfather of Poker.” This year, Daniel Negreanu marked Doyle Brunson Day with a story that says a lot about Brunson and his close friend Phil Ivey.

Speaking on the Poker Podcast, Negreanu compared the pair to The Odd Couple, the 1970s sitcom about two mismatched roommates. They argued constantly, he said. To outsiders it could look like real dislike. Underneath it, though, was deep mutual respect.

The match that never started

Negreanu’s favourite memory comes from Shadow Creek, the exclusive golf course in Las Vegas.

Brunson and Ivey were known for gambling freely in the casino pits. Against each other, however, every edge mattered. Before one round, they began debating handicap strokes, down to whether one of them should get four shots or four and a half.

Negreanu said these arguments normally wrapped up in a few minutes. This one did not. By around 3 p.m., the group accepted that no golf would be played that day. Neither man would give an inch.

“The original solver”

Negreanu also praised Brunson’s poker mind, which was far ahead of its time. Long before computers and GTO software, Brunson studied the game by hand.

He would deal out matchups, such as ace-king against a pair of fives, a hundred times over and record the results. Today, solvers do that work in seconds. Brunson did it with a pencil and paper. Negreanu summed it up simply: “He was the original solver.”

Why Doyle Brunson Day falls on 2 October

The date is a nod to Brunson’s signature hand, ten-deuce (10-2). Brunson won the WSOP Main Event in back-to-back years, 1976 and 1977, holding 10-2 on the final hand both times. The hand has carried his name ever since.

Brunson’s longtime agent, Brian Balsbaugh of Poker Royalty, has described the day as a chance to play poker, celebrate the game and honour Brunson’s life every October.

How the poker world paid tribute in 2026

Tributes poured in across social media this year:

•           The Doyle Brunson Legacy page. Brunson’s X account, now run as a legacy page, shared a series of “Doylisms” in the days leading up to 2 October. It also reposted a 2023 clip of Balsbaugh explaining the meaning of the day.

•           Robbie Strazynski. The Cardplayer Lifestyle founder wrote about his three favourite memories of Brunson, including an April 2020 interview.

•           Tim Duckworth. The poker journalist showed off a signed copy of Super System, a gift from Brunson himself.

•           Jesse Fullen. The former PokerNews social media manager posted photos from years of content work with Brunson. That included recording a voiceover for Brunson’s autobiography at his Las Vegas home and a trip to Longworth, Texas, to see his college basketball trophy.

Where Ivey and Negreanu stand today (as of October 2026)

Both men who shared that golf course with Brunson are still winning at the highest level.

Phil Ivey has 11 WSOP bracelets, second only to Phil Hellmuth’s record 17. His most recent came in 2024 in the $10,000 Limit 2-7 Triple Draw Championship, ending a 10-year drought. At the 2026 WSOP he chased a 12th bracelet with a deep run to the final six of the $50,000 Poker Players Championship. That puts Ivey one bracelet ahead of his old friend Brunson’s total of 10.

Daniel Negreanu now has 8 WSOP bracelets. He won the 2026 WSOP $100,000 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller in July, beating Artur Martirosian heads-up for $2,257,718. Earlier in the series, he became the first player to pass $25 million in WSOP bracelet-event cashes. In September he narrowly missed a ninth bracelet, finishing seventh in the $10,000 PLO event at WSOP Online.

A legacy that keeps growing

More than three years after his death, Brunson still shapes how poker is played and remembered. His study habits foreshadowed the solver era. His book taught generations. And his friendships, like the stubborn, affectionate rivalry with Ivey, are still giving the game its best stories.

This Doyle Brunson Day, the best tribute might be the one Balsbaugh suggested: sit down, play a hand, and maybe look at that ten-deuce a little more fondly.
