1. What Is Let It Ride?

Let It Ride is a poker-based casino table game. It uses five-card poker hands, but it isn’t a traditional poker game where players compete against each other. You don’t play against the dealer either. You play against a fixed pay table, and your goal is to finish with a pair of 10s or better.

What makes it unusual is that you start with three equal bets, and you can pull back two of them as the hand develops. If your cards look weak, you take money off the table. If they look strong, you “let it ride”.

Is Let It Ride video poker? No. It’s a live table game dealt by a casino dealer. Electronic and online versions exist, but the original is played on a felt table with up to seven players.

3. Let It Ride Rules

•           Deck: one standard 52-card deck, usually shuffled by machine.

•           Three equal bets: before the deal, you place the same amount in three circles, usually marked 1, 2 and $.

•           Your cards: you receive three private cards.

•           Community cards: two cards are dealt face down in the centre. Every player uses them.

•           Two pull-back decisions:

–          after seeing your three cards, you can pull back bet 1;

–          after the first community card is revealed, you can pull back bet 2.

–          The two decisions are independent: you can ride bet 1 and still pull back bet 2.

•           The third bet ($) can never be removed. It always plays.

•           Minimum winning hand: a pair of 10s. A pair of 9s or lower, or no pair, loses every bet still in play.

•           No ties or pushes: you aren’t compared with the dealer or other players, so a hand can’t tie. It either matches a line on the pay table or it loses.

•           How payouts are calculated: each bet still on the table is paid at the pay-table odds for your final hand. Bets you pulled back are simply returned and take no part in the result.

•           Maximum payout: some casinos set a maximum total payout per hand. Check the table placard.

•           Hand signals (live tables): scratch your cards on the felt to pull a bet back, and slide them under your chips to let it ride. Don’t touch your chips after the deal, because the dealer handles all pull-backs.

•           Cards stay private: many casinos don’t allow you to show your cards to other players.

How to choose a good Let It Ride pay table

Pay tables can vary between casinos and online versions. A small cut to one mid-level payout can raise the house edge noticeably. We calculated the house edge with optimal strategy for the standard table and three example reduced tables:

Pay tableFull houseFlushHouse edge (per unit)
Standard11 to 18 to 13.51%
Example A (lower full house)9 to 18 to 14.21%
Example B (lower flush)11 to 16 to 14.33%
Example C (both lower)9 to 16 to 15.04%

All other payouts as standard. Calculated by PokerClubGames by evaluating every possible deal with optimal pull-back decisions. Our standard-table result (3.506%) matches the published 3.51%. Examples A–C are illustrations, not specific casinos’ tables.

What to check before you sit down:

1.         A pair of 10s pays 1 to 1.

2.         Full house pays 11 to 1 and flush pays 8 to 1.

3.         Royal flush pays 1,000 to 1, and check for any maximum payout per hand.

4.         Online: open the game’s help or info screen to see the pay table and listed RTP.

7. Let It Ride Strategy

Let It Ride strategy comes down to two decisions: one after your first three cards, one after the first community card. You don’t need to memorise much.

Let It Ride strategy for beginners: 5 rules

1.         Never let small pairs ride. A pair of 2s to 9s doesn’t pay.

2.         Let paying hands ride. A pair of 10s or better is already a winner.

3.         Let strong suited draws ride, following the charts below.

4.         Don’t chase the 3-Card Bonus. Its house edge is far higher than the main game’s.

5.         Remember the third bet can’t be removed. Choose your unit size with all three bets in mind.

8. First Decision Strategy (3 Cards)

Let it ride with:

•           A paying hand already: a pair of 10s or better, or three of a kind.

•           Three cards to a royal flush.

•           Three suited cards in a row, 3-4-5 or higher (e.g. 4-5-6 suited).

•           Three suited cards with one gap, if at least one card is 10 or higher (e.g. 7-8-10 suited).

•           Three suited cards with two gaps, if at least two cards are 10 or higher (e.g. 8-10-J suited).

Pull back everything else, including small pairs and unsuited high cards.

In our calculation, optimal strategy lets bet 1 ride on only about 7.3% of hands, roughly 1 in 14.

9. Second Decision Strategy (4 Cards)

Let it ride with:

•           A paying hand already: a pair of 10s or better, two pair, three of a kind or better.

•           Four cards to a flush.

•           Four cards to an outside (open-ended) straight, 10-high or better (e.g. 7-8-9-10).

•           Four cards to an inside straight with four high cards, 10 or higher (e.g. 10-J-Q-A).

•           Four cards to a straight flush.

Pull back everything else, including small pairs and low open-ended straight draws like 3-4-5-6.

In our calculation, optimal strategy lets bet 2 ride on about 15.1% of hands, roughly 1 in 7.

11. Let It Ride House Edge & Element of Risk

We calculated the game exactly by evaluating every possible deal:

MeasureResult
House edge per betting unit (optimal strategy)3.51%
Average units in play at the end of a hand1.22 (out of 3)
Element of risk (loss per unit actually in play)~2.86%
Hands where bet 1 rides~7.3%
Hands where bet 2 rides~15.1%

Why strategy matters: three ways to play

How you playAverage loss per hand ($10 unit)
Optimal strategy (charts above)~$0.35
Pull back bets 1 and 2 every time~$3.73
Let all three bets ride every time~$11.18

The $ bet on its own, which can’t be pulled back, loses about 37% on average. Your two optional bets, made only when the odds favour you, win back almost all of that loss. The pull-back decisions are the game.

Per hour: at about 50 hands an hour and $10 a unit, optimal play costs roughly $17.50 an hour on average. Any single session can swing well above or below this.

Calculated by PokerClubGames from a standard 52-card deck.

What this means: You’ll finish with a paying hand about once every four hands, but most wins are small (pair of 10s or two pair). A straight or better comes only about once every 132 hands.

13. 3-Card Bonus & Side Bets

Many tables offer an optional 3-Card Bonus (also called the Let It Ride Bonus). It must be placed before the deal and pays only on your first three cards, usually on a pair or better. Some casinos also offer a progressive jackpot version.

BetTypical house edge
Main game (optimal strategy)3.51% per unit
3-Card BonusAround 14% to over 36%, depending on the pay table (Casino.org)

Casinos choose from several approved bonus pay tables to set the edge they want. Competitive local markets tend to offer more generous ones.

Our advice: If you play it, keep it small and check the pay table. It’s entertainment, not strategy.

14. Common Let It Ride Mistakes

1.         Letting small pairs ride. Pairs below 10s don’t pay.

2.         Riding unsuited high cards. A-K-Q of mixed suits is a pull-back.

3.         Forgetting the decisions are independent. You can ride bet 1 and still pull back bet 2.

4.         Letting everything ride. That costs about 32 times more per hand than optimal play.

5.         Not checking the pay table. A lower full house or flush payout raises the edge.

6.         Betting big on the side bet. It costs far more than the main game.

7.         Forgetting the real minimum. A $10 table needs $30 per hand to start.

Which is better? Ultimate Texas Hold’em has a much lower element of risk if you play it well, but it needs more strategy. Let It Ride is easier to learn and lower-pressure.

17. Playing Let It Ride Online

Let It Ride is available in digital RNG versions at some online casinos. Light & Wonder, which owns the brand, offers a digital version. One game database lists it with a 97% RTP, but the real return depends on the pay table the casino uses.

Online tips:

•           Read the pay table in the game’s help or info screen.

•           Use free-play or demo versions to practise the strategy charts.

•           Only play at sites licensed in your country. Availability varies and online gambling rules change. Readers in India should check the current rules in their state.

18. Is Let It Ride Worth Playing?

ProsCons
Simple rules and only two decisions3.51% house edge, higher than many table games
You can pull back two of your three betsSide bets are expensive
No dealer hand to beat, so no dealer qualificationPay-table cuts can raise the edge
Relaxed, social tableSkill reduces the edge but can’t remove it
Big payouts possible (royal flush 1,000 to 1)Big hands are rare

Verdict: Let It Ride is worth playing if you want a relaxed, social casino game with easy decisions, and you accept it as paid entertainment. If lower cost matters most, Ultimate Texas Hold’em or Three Card Poker give better value for players who learn their strategy.

19. Let It Ride History

•           Early 1990s: Shuffle Master founder John Breeding created Let It Ride to help sell the company’s automatic card shufflers to casinos.

•           2013: Shuffle Master was acquired by Bally Technologies.

•           2014: Bally was acquired by Scientific Games, which later became Light & Wonder.

•           2026: Let It Ride remains part of Light & Wonder’s table games portfolio. The company reported table products revenue up 24% to $63 million in Q1 2026, and showcased new electronic table and progressive technology at ICE and IGA 2026.

Newer poker-based games such as Three Card Poker and Ultimate Texas Hold’em later took much of Let It Ride’s floor space, partly because they deal more hands per hour.

20. Quick Strategy Checklist

•           ☐ Decide your unit size, remembering you need three units to start

•           ☐ After 3 cards: ride only paying hands and strong suited draws
