Why poker keeps showing up in video games

Poker is a perfect fit for games. It’s easy to learn, tense to play and full of characters, which is exactly what open-world and story games need. Over the years, poker video games have ranged from a quick side activity in a Wild West saloon to full games built entirely around the table.

But they’re not all the same kind of poker. Some are casino games against a dealer, some are real Texas Hold’em against AI or other players, and some are mostly about the jokes. This guide covers the four that players ask about most, what’s changed in 2026, and the strategy that actually works in each.

GTA V poker strategy: what you’re actually playing

Here’s the first thing most players get wrong. GTA V’s story mode doesn’t include a poker table. The poker in Los Santos lives in GTA Online, inside the Diamond Casino & Resort, which arrived in 2019. And it isn’t Texas Hold’em. It’s GTA Online three card poker, a casino game where you play against the dealer, not other players.

That’s good news for strategy, because Three Card Poker has one simple, mathematically proven rule.

How GTA Online three card poker works

•           You place an Ante bet and see your three cards.

•           You either fold (losing the Ante) or play by adding a bet equal to your Ante.

•           The dealer needs at least Queen-high to qualify.

•           There’s also an optional Pair Plus side bet that pays on your own hand only, whatever the dealer has.

•           In three-card hands, a straight beats a flush, because straights are rarer with only three cards.

The one rule that matters: Queen-6-4

The core of any GTA V poker strategy is simple: play any hand that’s Queen-6-4 or better, and fold everything worse.

In a standard real-casino game, following this rule gives the house an edge of about 3.37% on the Ante. GTA Online uses the same basic rules, so the same decision rule applies. Just remember it’s a video game: the casino’s internal card dealing isn’t independently audited the way a licensed real-money table is.

Should you bet Pair Plus?

It depends on the pay table, and sources disagree on GTA Online’s flush payout. Check the in-game pay table before you bet:

If your table pays 3 to 1 on a flush, skip Pair Plus and stick to the Ante.

Practical GTA Online tips

•           Treat it as a money sink, not a money maker. Every casino game here has a house edge, so over time you’ll lose chips.

•        Watch real-money spending. Chips are bought with GTA can be bought with real money. Set a limit if you play a lot.

•           Check availability. Around 50 countries restrict the Diamond Casino’s gambling features. Players there can still enter the casino but can’t play the games.

What about GTA 6 poker?

GTA VI is set to launch on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. As of October 2026, Rockstar hasn’t confirmed a casino or any form of GTA 6 poker, so treat any claims you see as rumours until Rockstar says otherwise.

Red Dead Redemption 2 poker

If you want real Texas Hold’em in an open world, Red Dead Redemption 2 poker is the one to play. It’s a proper No-Limit Hold’em mini-game against AI opponents, set in some of the best-looking saloons in gaming.

Red Dead Online poker

Red Dead Online poker arrived in May 2019, when the online mode left beta. It uses the same tables and locations, but against real players. You play with in-game dollars rather than gold bars. Like GTA Online’s casino, it’s blocked in some countries with strict gambling laws, even though no real money can be won.

•           Tighten up early. Fold weak offsuit hands, especially from early position. AI opponents call a lot, so strong starting hands win more often than bluffs.

•           Bet for value. When you have top pair or better, bet it. Loose opponents will pay you off.

•           Online, you can’t read faces. Just like real online poker, Red Dead Online gives you no physical tells. Focus on betting patterns instead.

Poker Night at the Inventory: the 2026 remaster

Poker Night at the Inventory is the cult-classic poker game from Telltale Games, first released in November 2010. You play No-Limit Texas Hold’em against four characters from other games and web series, with rising blinds and plenty of banter.

It became hard to get for years. After Telltale’s original studio closed, the game was pulled from sale in May 2019. That changed in 2026:

The Governor of Poker 3 game is the most “real poker” of the four: a free multiplayer Texas Hold’em game against real people, wrapped in a Wild West theme. It launched on Steam on February 19, 2016, and is now run under Playtika, which acquired Youda Games’ portfolio.

That’s steady but modest on PC. Most of the player base is on mobile, where the game is also available, with cross-platform play.

•           Expect loose play. Free chips mean opponents shove and call with weak hands. Tighten up and let them pay you.

•           Use Push or Fold to learn short-stack play. It’s a quick, low-pressure way to practise all-in decisions.
