What Is Winamax?
Winamax is a Paris-based online poker and sports betting operator, licensed in France by the ANJ (Autorité Nationale des Jeux). The company describes itself as a leader in French online poker, with around 350,000 monthly poker players. It also says it operates in Spain and Germany, with Italy and Portugal planned. Which products are offered (poker, betting or both) can differ by country.
Winamax tournaments are built around two pillars:
• Online series on the Winamax client, led by the Winamax Series, which ran three times in 2026.
• Live events, led by the Winamax Poker Tour (WiPT), which you can qualify for free, and the Winamax Poker Open (WPO).
Both flagship live events set new entry records in 2026, and the January Winamax Series carried a record €35 million in guarantees.

Winamax Tournament Buy-Ins
Winamax tournaments cover almost every budget. Here is what’s typically available in each range, based on 2026 schedules.
| Buy-in range | What you’ll find | Example (2026) | Best for |
| Free | WiPT Sit & Go Starting Block freerolls | WiPT 2026–27 Tremplins | Beginners, zero-risk shot at a live event |
| €2–€5 | Micro-stakes Series events, low-cost satellites | Series buy-ins start at €2 | New players, small bankrolls |
| €10–€20 | Popular mid-micro MTTs and bounty events | €20 Paradise Space KO (€400K GTD, Islands) | Recreational regulars |
| €50–€100 | Mid-stakes Series events | Series mid-tier events | Experienced recreational players |
| €250–€500 | Higher online events; live Main Events | €250 top Islands buy-in; €500 WPO and WiPT Grande Finale | Serious players, live trips |
| €1,000+ | High-roller Series events | €1,000 top Series buy-in (Sep 2026) | High-stakes regulars |
How much bankroll do you need? A common guideline for tournament players is 50–100 buy-ins for your usual level, because tournament results swing a lot. For example, if you regularly play €10 tournaments, that means a €500–€1,000 tournament bankroll. Recreational players who play for fun can use a separate monthly budget instead. Just decide on it before the series starts.
Winamax Tournament Formats Explained
| Format | How it works | Best for | Main risk |
| Expresso | 3-player hyper-turbo sit-and-go. A random draw sets the prize pool before the first hand. | Short sessions, jackpot chances | Most draws pay a small multiple |
| Space KO | Bounty tournament where every bounty gets a random multiplier | Action players | Very swingy |
| Progressive KO | Half of each bounty you win is added to your own bounty | Aggressive, pressure-based play | Over-calling to chase bounties |
| Mass Start / Marathon / Master | Large-field MTTs with different speeds, plus Championship versions | Classic tournament players | Long sessions |
| Sit & Go Starting Block | Free qualifiers for the Winamax Poker Tour | Beginners, budget players | Big, loose fields |
| Satellites | Tournaments that award tickets or seats instead of cash | Building up to bigger events | Playing for chips, not the seat |
Industry note: On October 5, 2026, GGPoker launched “Ocean KO”, a version of Winamax’s Space KO with bounty multipliers of up to 400x.
Winamax Tournaments for Beginners
The cheapest ways to start
1. Free: WiPT Sit & Go Starting Block freerolls. You risk nothing and can win a seat at a live event.
2. €2–€5: Micro-stakes Series events and satellites.
3. Low-cost satellites: Win Series tickets instead of buying in directly.
Expresso or MTT: which should you start with?
| Expresso | MTT (multi-table tournament) | |
| Length | A few minutes | Several hours |
| Players | 3 | Hundreds or thousands |
| Skill focus | Push-fold with short stacks | Full range of poker skills |
| Variance | Very high (random prize pool) | High (large fields) |
| Learning value | Teaches short-stack all-in decisions | Teaches deep-stack play, ICM and endgame |
| Best for | Short sessions | Players with free evenings |
Our suggestion: If you’re brand new, start with low buy-in MTTs or the free WiPT qualifiers. You’ll see many more situations per euro. Add Expresso later, once you’ve learned basic push-fold ranges.
Beginner checklist
• Learn the poker hand rankings and basic Texas Hold’em rules first.
• Start with one table at a time.
• Set a budget for the month or the series, and don’t chase losses.
• Use the free WiPT route before spending money on live events.
• Check event start times in French time (CET/CEST).
How to Qualify for the Winamax Poker Tour for Free
The Winamax Poker Tour is free to enter at the first stages. Here’s how the route works for the 2026–27 season.
| Stage | What it is | Cost | What you win |
| 1. Sit & Go Starting Block | Free online qualifiers on Winamax.fr during each stage’s Tremplin window | Free | Progress toward a live stage seat |
| 2. Tremplins (online finals) | Online qualifying window for each live stage (about 4 weeks) | Free | A seat at that live stage |
| 3. Live regional stage | Two-day live event. Day 1 starts 11:00 Saturday, Day 2 starts 10:30 Sunday. | Free (travel at your own cost) | One of about 16 Grande Finale seats, plus a share of ~€11,000 in prizes |
| 4. Grande Finale | €500 national final in Aix-en-Provence | Seat won free | The WiPT title, the sword trophy and the top prize (€180,000 in 2026) |
The 2025–26 season in numbers:
| Metric | Figure |
| Online freeroll participants | About 266,000 |
| Live stage players | 9,583 across 10 stages |
| Players who reached the Grande Finale for free | About 190 |
| Grande Finale total entries | 3,610 (record) |
Most of the Grande Finale field doesn’t come through the freeroll route, so the free path is competitive. But it’s genuinely free, and every season about 190 players turn €0 into a €500 seat.
Important: The WiPT runs through Winamax.fr. You need a valid Winamax France account and must meet Winamax’s eligibility rules.

Winamax Satellite Strategy
Satellites are the cheapest way into big Winamax events. They need a different strategy from normal tournaments.
Satellite vs direct buy-in
| Satellite | Direct buy-in | |
| Cost | A fraction of the target buy-in | Full price |
| Outcome | You win a seat or nothing (all seats are equal) | You play the event straight away |
| Best for | Players taking a shot above their normal level | Players with the bankroll for that level |
| Strategy | Survival first | Chip accumulation |
Key satellite rules
• A seat is a seat. Finishing with 1 chip or 1 million chips wins the same ticket. Near the seat bubble, fold almost everything that isn’t a premium hand.
• Big stacks should stop gambling. If you’re safely inside the seats, folding is often correct.
• Short stacks must act early. Shove before the blinds eat your stack completely.
• Don’t fire too many bullets. Five €20 satellite entries for a €100 seat costs as much as buying the seat directly.
Satellite bankroll guide
| Your target event | Sensible satellite level | Notes |
| €500 live Main Event (WPO, WiPT) | Low-cost satellites, or the free WiPT route | Count travel costs too |
| €100–€250 Series events | €5–€20 satellites | Road to Series |
| €10–€50 Series events | Expresso Series tickets or €1–€5 satellites | Good for small bankrolls |

Tips for Playing Winamax Tournaments
• Expect 6-max live. WPO and WiPT Main Events are 6-handed, so open more hands than you would at a full-ring table.
• Value bet in big fields. Large, recreational-friendly fields often call too much. Bet strong hands for value.
• Respect qualifier deadlines. Each WiPT stage has its own Tremplin window, and once it closes you miss that stage.
• Convert start times. Events are listed in French time (CET/CEST). Players in Asia, including India, would see evening events run late into the night.
• Learn the bounty formats. Space KO and Progressive KO change your calling ranges.
• Set a budget before every series and stick to it.
Who Can Play Winamax Tournaments?
Winamax is licensed in France by the ANJ. The company says it also operates in Spain and Germany, with Italy and Portugal planned, but the products on offer can differ by country.
