The final table unraveled fast. Play had been paused overnight around 2 a.m. with four players left, Fahredin Mustafov holding a narrow chip lead among a relatively even pack. When action resumed, Peters wasted little time reclaiming the top spot, while Dominykas Mikolaitis doubled through Mustafov twice in quick succession early on.
The tide turned when Mustafov’s jacks held against Mikolaitis’s jammed pocket sevens, leaving the Lithuanian with a single big blind. He was eliminated in fourth two hands later at the hands of Peters, roughly an hour into the day’s play.
Three-handed play didn’t last long either. Calvin Anderson opened from the button, Peters three-bet from the small blind, and Anderson shoved roughly 30 big blinds with pocket deuces. Peters called with pocket nines, the deuces missed, and Anderson’s bid for a third bracelet of the summer came up empty in third place.
That left Peters with better than a 3-to-1 chip lead heading into heads-up play against Mustafov, and it lasted exactly one hand. Mustafov limped the button holding pocket fives for about 26 big blinds; Peters shoved from the big blind with ace-seven and got a snap call. A seven landed on the flop, and Mustafov couldn’t find a five to survive, handing Peters the bracelet.
Looking Ahead
Peters, who according to his own account said the run of near-misses this summer had been genuinely discouraging, called the win a relief after so many close calls. He credited the support of his fiancée, Hayley , on the rail from the tournament’s first hand — along with his parents and brothers following along from home.
