Spin Poker Game: Rules, Payouts & How to Play

Spin Poker is video poker that borrows a slot machine’s look. You play one five-card hand, but your held cards stretch across a 3×5 grid. Up to nine pay lines then score that grid as separate poker hands, so one good draw can pay several times over.
This guide explains what the game is, how a hand plays out, how pay lines and payouts work, and what return to expect. When you’re ready to sharpen your decisions, our Spin Poker strategy guide takes it from there.
A note on the numbers: Spin Poker can run several base games and paytables. Unless stated otherwise, the payouts and RTP on this page are for full-pay 9/6 Jacks or Better, the most common reference version. Always check the paytable on your machine.
1. Spin Poker Game Overview
What Is Spin Poker?
Spin Poker is a multi-line video poker game made by IGT, the company behind Game King machines. It uses standard video poker rules: a 52-card deck, a five-card deal, one draw, and a fixed paytable. The difference is presentation. Your cards sit on a slot-style grid, and you win on pay lines instead of a single hand.
How the IGT Spin Poker Game Works
The screen has three rows and five columns. Your five dealt cards appear in the middle row. When you hold a card, it is copied into the top and bottom rows of that column. When you press Spin, the empty spots fill with new cards from the same deck. Then every active pay line is scored.
Video Poker vs. Slot Machines
- Slots hide their math. You can’t tell a 92% machine from a 96% one by looking at it.
- Video poker shows its paytable on screen, so the long-run return can be calculated.
- Your choices count. Which cards you hold changes your return; in a slot, you only press a button.
Spin Poker vs. Spin & Go Tournaments
The names sound alike, but these are different games:
- Spin Poker is a casino video poker machine. You play against a paytable, not other people.
- Spin & Go is an online poker tournament format. Three players buy in, and a random multiplier sets the prize pool.
This page covers only the IGT video poker game.
2. How to Play Spin Poker
The Card Grid and Nine Pay Lines
The grid has 15 card positions: 3 rows by 5 columns. A pay line picks one card from each column to make a five-card hand.
- Lines 1 to 3 run straight across the top, middle and bottom rows.
- Lines 4 to 9 cross between rows in V, inverted-V and zigzag shapes.
The exact shape of lines 4 to 9 can vary by machine. Tap the help or pay line screen to see your machine’s line map.
Selecting Cards to Hold
After the deal, tap the cards you want to keep. Each held card locks into all three rows of its column, so it appears on every pay line.
How the Spin Button Works
Spin is the draw. Every empty position fills from the 47 cards left in the deck, and no card can appear twice on the grid.
How Each Pay Line Is Evaluated
Each active line is scored as its own five-card hand. Because lines share positions, one new card can sit on several lines at once. A strong card can complete several winning hands, and a weak one can spoil several.
Sample Hand: Step by Step
Setup: 25¢ machine, 9 lines, 5 coins per line. Total bet: 45 coins ($11.25).
Step 1: The deal. Five cards appear in the middle row:
Col: 1 2 3 4 5
Middle: A♥ K♥ 9♥ 5♥ 7♣
Step 2: The hold. You keep the four hearts and discard the 7♣. The hearts copy into all three rows:
Col: 1 2 3 4 5
Top: A♥ K♥ 9♥ 5♥ [ ]
Middle: A♥ K♥ 9♥ 5♥ [ ]
Bottom: A♥ K♥ 9♥ 5♥ [ ]
Step 3: The spin. Only column 5 is empty, so three new cards are drawn, one per row:
Col: 1 2 3 4 5
Top: A♥ K♥ 9♥ 5♥ Q♥
Middle: A♥ K♥ 9♥ 5♥ 2â™
Bottom: A♥ K♥ 9♥ 5♥ 3♥
Step 4: Scoring the lines. Columns 1 to 4 are the same on every line, so each line’s result depends only on which column-5 card it uses:
| Line ends on | Five-card hand | Result | Pays (at 5 coins) |
| Q♥ (top) | A♥ K♥ 9♥ 5♥ Q♥ | Flush | 30 coins |
| 2♠(middle) | A♥ K♥ 9♥ 5♥ 2♠| Ace high, no pair | 0 |
| 3♥ (bottom) | A♥ K♥ 9♥ 5♥ 3♥ | Flush | 30 coins |
Step 5: Your total. Line 1 (top row) and Line 3 (bottom row) are both flushes, worth 60 coins together. Every zigzag line that ends on the top or bottom cell of column 5 also pays a flush. Each zigzag ending on the middle cell pays nothing. Check your machine’s line map to see which lines those are.
What this hand teaches: a single-hand machine gives you one shot at the flush. Spin Poker gave you three different column-5 cards, and two of them hit. The same shared-cell effect makes results swing in both directions.
3. Spin Poker Rules and Payouts
Poker Hand Rankings
Spin Poker uses standard five-card poker hand rankings; see our poker hand rankings guide for examples. In the Jacks or Better version, the lowest paying hand is a pair of jacks.
The Paytable Explained
The paytable shows what each hand pays per coin bet on each line. Here is the full-pay 9/6 Jacks or Better paytable:
| Hand | Pays per coin | Pays at 5 coins |
| Royal Flush | 250 | 4,000 |
| Straight Flush | 50 | 250 |
| Four of a Kind | 25 | 125 |
| Full House | 9 | 45 |
| Flush | 6 | 30 |
| Straight | 4 | 20 |
| Three of a Kind | 3 | 15 |
| Two Pair | 2 | 10 |
| Jacks or Better | 1 | 5 |
“9/6” means the full house pays 9 and the flush pays 6 per coin. Machines with lower numbers on those two lines pay back less. If your machine shows different figures, those figures are the ones that apply to you.
Royal Flush and Other Winning Hands
The royal flush (A-K-Q-J-10 of one suit) is the top prize. In Spin Poker it often lands on more than one line at once. Your held royal cards sit on every line, and the one card that completes it usually covers several lines.
Maximum Coin Bet and the Royal Flush Bonus
On the 9/6 paytable, every hand pays the same rate per coin from one to five coins except the royal. At five coins it jumps from 1,250 to 4,000 coins. To get the full royal payout, bet five coins on every line you play. If the total feels high, play fewer lines rather than fewer coins.
Example Payout Calculation
On a 25¢ machine at five coins per line (9/6 paytable):
- One full house: 45 coins × $0.25 = $11.25, a full spin’s bet back from one line.
- One royal flush: 4,000 coins × $0.25 = $1,000.
- Royals on three lines in the same spin: $3,000.
4. RTP, House Edge and Volatility
Return to Player (RTP)
RTP is the share of all money bet that a game returns over a very long run. Full-pay 9/6 Jacks or Better returns about 99.54% with perfect strategy, a house edge of about 0.46%. The Spin format doesn’t change that figure. It changes how wins arrive, not how much the game returns.
How the Paytable Changes RTP
Every cut to the paytable lowers RTP. Even dropping the flush from 6 to 5 takes 9/6 Jacks or Better down to about 98.45%. Two machines that look identical can return very different amounts, which is why reading the paytable is the most useful habit you can build. Our Spin Poker strategy guide compares the most common paytables side by side.
Variance and Bankroll
Spin Poker swings more than its RTP suggests. All lines share one deck, so wins and losses tend to come together. Plan your session budget around those swings, not around the average.
Why Royal Flushes Can Be Infrequent
On 9/6 Jacks or Better, a royal comes roughly once every 40,000 hands per line with optimal play. In Spin Poker, royals often land on several lines at once, so the gaps between royal hits are longer than the line count alone suggests.
Expected Cost per Spin
A full max bet is 45 coins: $0.45 at 1¢, $2.25 at 5¢, $11.25 at 25¢ and $45 at $1. At 99.54% RTP, the average long-run cost is about half a cent of every dollar bet. For hourly cost and bankroll planning, see the Spin Poker strategy guide.
5. Spin Poker Strategy: The Essentials
This page sticks to how the game works. A few points every new player should know:
- The strategy is the same as single-hand video poker. Use the chart for your game and paytable; the grid doesn’t change which cards to hold.
- Mistakes multiply. One wrong hold repeats across every active line, so take your time.
- Max coins first, then lines. Five coins on fewer lines keeps the full royal bonus.
- Practice for free. Free Spin Poker apps on iOS and Android let you learn the grid without risking money.
Next step: read our full Spin Poker strategy guide. It covers which cards to hold, common mistakes, paytable comparisons, variance and cost per hour.
Spin Poker Variants
IGT has released several versions of the format. Features and availability vary by casino, so check the machine’s help screen.
- Spin Poker (classic): 9 lines on a 3×5 grid.
- Spin Poker Deluxe: a larger version with more pay lines.
- Triple Spin Poker: expands the format further.
- Super Times Pay Spin Poker: adds random multipliers to winning hands.
Each version can run different base games, such as Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker, Double Double Bonus or Deuces Wild, each with its own paytable.
Where to Play Spin Poker
- Land-based casinos: usually inside IGT Game King multi-game machines, sometimes as a standalone cabinet.
- Online casinos: IGT video poker is offered at licensed online casinos in regulated markets. Titles vary by operator and region; only play where online gaming is legal for you.
- Free play: social casino apps let you learn with no real money at risk.
