Irish Poker Open Sydney 2026: The First-Ever International IPO Stop

For 46 years the Irish Open has meant Dublin. Since 1980 it has run in Ireland without exception, the oldest No-Limit Hold’em tournament in Europe and one of the few festivals that genuinely earned its reputation rather than bought it.

On Monday, August 31, that changed. The doors opened at the Poker Palace in western Sydney and the Irish Open began its first festival outside Ireland in its history.

It’s running right now, and the A$1,000,000 guaranteed Main Event starts this Sunday.

The A$1 Million Main Event

The centrepiece is an A$2,000 buy-in Main Event carrying a A$1,000,000 guarantee, which puts it among the standout tournaments on the Australian calendar this year.

The Mini Irish Open: A$500,000 guaranteed

If the Main Event is the headline, the Mini is the volume play — and at the Irish Open it has a habit of getting out of hand.

At A$360 with a A$500,000 guarantee and 11 starting flights, it opened the festival on August 31 and runs Day 1s through September 11.

Context for why that guarantee may look conservative by the end: the Mini Irish Open in Dublin this April drew a record 7,349 entries. Nobody knows yet whether the Sydney field will behave the same way, but the structure has been built assuming it might.

Lucky 8s: the brand-new event

Sydney gets a tournament that has never appeared on an Irish Open schedule before.

The Lucky 8s carries an A$880 buy-in, a A$250,000 guarantee, and an 80,000 starting stack — deep for the price. Five starting flights including a turbo Day 1e, playing down to a winner on September 6.

For value hunters, this is arguably the most interesting item on the schedule. A$880 for 80,000 chips is a structure that rewards patient play in a way most mid-buy-in Australian events don’t.

Why Sydney

The choice of venue is less random than it first appears.

Greater Sydney has a substantial Irish-born population and a much larger Irish-Australian community, which gives the festival a built-in audience that already knows the brand. The Poker Palace at Club Marconi is one of Australia’s established major-event venues, with a long history of hosting the Australia Poker Open and similar festivals.

Irish Open co-owner Paul O’Reilly has framed the expansion around the tournament’s age and standing — a Dublin institution running continuously since 1980, now testing whether the formula travels.

Early signs say the organisers are treating it seriously rather than as a branding exercise. Forty events, seven-figure guarantees and a fifteen-day run is a flagship schedule, not a satellite one.

Getting there and staying

The venue. Club Marconi sits in Bossley Park, roughly 30 minutes’ drive west of Sydney International Airport (SYD) and around 35 minutes from the Sydney CBD and the harbour attractions.

Accommodation. The festival has arranged a preferential rate at the Mercure Sydney Liverpool, about 16 minutes from Club Marconi. Rooms from around A$184 per night for a double, bookable by emailing the Poker Palace directly. The property has 192 rooms, a resort-style pool, a gym, and — unusually — its own ice rink.

Currency note for visiting players. The Australian dollar sits somewhat below the US dollar, which makes the A$2,000 Main Event and A$360 Mini meaningfully cheaper in USD terms than the headline numbers suggest. Worth factoring in if you’re travelling from abroad.

What comes next for the Irish Open

Sydney is the first stop, not the only one.

Marrakech, November 10–15, 2026. Casino de Marrakech hosts the second international festival, with a €1,150 Main Event carrying a €500,000 guarantee — positioned as a mid-stakes destination event.

United States, 2027. Confirmed but not yet dated or venued.

Dublin continues. The 46th edition ran at the Royal Dublin Society from March 26 to April 6 this year, with a €1,150 Main Event that blew past its €2.5 million guarantee to build a €4,852,910 prize pool from 5,003 entries. The international stops are additions to the Dublin flagship, not replacements for it.
